Article history: Received 22 March 2013 Received in revised form 30 May 2013 Accepted 25 June 2013 Available online xxxx The paper explores the relationship between intelligence and the semantic processing of natural language quantifiers. The first study revealed that intelligence is positively associated with the subjects' performance when solving a picture verification task with one of the four types of sentences: Aristotelian (e.g. ‘All cars are red’), parity (e.g. ‘An even number of cars are red’), numerical (e.g. ‘More than five cars are red’), and proportional (‘More than half of the cars are red’). The strongest relationship was observed between the cognitive ability and the accuracy of proportional sentences, in accordance with the computational theory which predicts the highest engagement of working memory (WM) within the group of proportional quantifiers. Moreover, individuals with higher intelligence reacted faster, but this was observed only in case of quantifiers with low complexity. Exploring further, in the second study we found that WM and intelligence were both significant predictors of subjects' score on proportional sentences. In the third study, we examined the relationships between quantifiers, intelligence, short-term memory (STM), and executive control function. STM was correlated with all types of quantifiers that need counting and keeping track of elements (parity, numerical, and proportional). Only proportional quantifiers were associated with cognitive control. The obtained results are discussed within the computational paradigm of language processing. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Predicting Gestational Diabetes Using an Intelligent Neural Network Algorithm
Introduction: Due to the large amount of data on people with diabetes, it is very difficult to extract the predictors of diabetes. Data mining science has achieved this important goal with the help of its effective methods with the aim of discovering the prediction of diseases and has helped physicians and medical staff in predicting and diagnosing diseases. Methods: The present research is...
متن کاملThe role of integrated management in the realization of intelligent transportation (Case study: Zahedan city)
With the development of cities and increasing population, many challenges have been created, the most important of which is urban transportation. The inability of traditional urban management to address this challenge has led to some approaches, including intelligent transportation. Adopting and implementing such an approach in metropolitan areas requires a change in management approach, of whi...
متن کاملType-2 Fuzzy Hybrid Expert System For Diagnosis Of Degenerative Disc Diseases
One-third of the people with an age over twenty have some signs of degenerated discs. However, in most of the patients the mere presence of degenerative discs is not a problem leading to pain, neurological compression, or other symptoms. This paper presents an interval type-2 fuzzy hybrid rule-based system to diagnose the abnormal degenerated discs where pain variables are represented by interv...
متن کاملProviding Intelligent Software to Diagnose the Type and Severity of Mental Disorders Based on QEEG: A Comparative Study between the Statistical Method and the Intelligent Method
Background: Identifying mental disorder biomarkers is one of the leading goals of the clinical science. Objectives: This study aimed to provide an artificial intelligence based solution and software program to diagnose the type and severity of mental disorders according to the quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) of patients. Materials and Methods: The QEEG data collected from 45 patients ...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of a Fuzzy Intelligent System for Predicting Mortality in Trauma Patients in the Intensive Care Unit
Introduction: The intensive care unit is one of the most costly parts of the national health sector. These costs are largely attributable to the length of stay in the intensive care unit. For this reason, there are significant benefits in predicting patients' length of stay and the percentage of deaths in intensive care units. Therefore, in this study, a fuzzy logic based intelligent system was...
